Modern Jiu-Jitsu with traditional martial arts principles

As a self-defence martial art, our practice is centered around grappling, ground fighting and holding submissions. Jiu-Jitsu works the mind and the body, applying the principles of pressure, leverage and timing to achieve non-violent submissions.

At Chess Club, we pride ourselves on offering a safe place to learn modern jiu-jitsu techniques whilst maintaining the art’s traditional values. All ages and abilities are welcome in our dojo. Alongside exercising and having fun, you’re also learning a skill that could potentially save your life. Get started today!

Coaches

  • Joined the Chess Club Jiu Jitsu gym 8 weeks ago and Rafa the head coach has created a fun, friendly environment for newbies and everyone looking to give Jiu Jitsu a go! A community vibe where you feel you belong, welcomed and respected regardless of who, what, and where you come from. This extends to Jake, Joel and the Chess club team creating a brilliant health and fitness hub culture in the Sunny Coast. Love your work Chess Club!

  • Finding the right place to start a new practice or discipline is important, it needs to have the right leaders and a clear foundation, growth is the natural byproduct. I’ve found exactly what I needed at Chess Club.

  • Rafa is very welcoming towards visitors. I came down from Melbourne and he was very enthusiastic to have me visit. His students were very respectful on the mat. I felt safe training with them. I highly recommend others to come and drop by, if as a local wanting to try jiu jitsu for the first time or if you need some training whilst on holiday!

  • Rafa, Jake and the team at Chess Club are extremely knowledgable in all aspects of Jiu-Jitsu and body movement, the way the classes are structured mean anyone of any level can take part and learn. There are no ego’s and I would recommend Chess Club to everyone !
